I. Target

The B-2 stealth bomber is the world’s most exotic strategic aircraft, a subsonic flying wing meant to be difficult for air defenses to detect—whether by radar or other means—yet capable of carrying nearly the same payload as the massive B-52. It came into service in the late 1990s primarily for use in a potential nuclear war with the Soviet Union, and clearly as a first-strike weapon rather than a retaliatory one. First-strike weapons have destabilizing, not deterrent, effects. It is probably just as well that the stealth bomber was not quite as stealthy as it was meant to be, and was so expensive—at $2.1 billion each—that only 21 were built before Congress refused to pay for more. Nineteen of them are now stationed close to the geographic center of the contiguous United States, in the desolate farmland of central Missouri, at Whiteman Air Force Base.

Amazon Flex allows drivers to get paid to deliver packages from their own vehicles. But is it a good deal for workers?

I’m sure I looked comical as I staggered down a downtown San Francisco street on a recent weekday, arms full of packages—as I dropped one and bent down to pick it up, another fell, and as I tried to rein that one in, another toppled.

Yet it wasn’t funny, not really. There I was, wearing a bright-yellow safety vest and working for Amazon Flex, a program in which the e-commerce giant pays regular people to deliver packages from their own vehicles for $18 to $25 an hour, before expenses. I was racing to make the deliveries before I got a ticket—there are few places for drivers without commercial vehicles to park in downtown San Francisco during the day—and also battling a growing rage as I lugged parcels to offices of tech companies that offered free food and impressive salaries to their employees, who seemed to spend their days ordering stuff online. Technology was allowing these people a good life, but it was just making me stressed and cranky.

In a wide-ranging conversation moderated by Bari Weiss, the controversial psychology professor was pressed for answers by a group quite different than his usual audiences.

In Aspen, Colorado, up a narrow switchback road, high above the picturesque valley, where a house unburdened by close neighbors opens onto a furnished open-air patio, I found Jordan Peterson, arguably the most influential, most controversial, and most improbable intellectual star in North America, earnestly holding forth to several of the very successful locals who were eager to meet him and to ask what project he is up to, exactly, with his relatively newfound fame.

That particular evening, sitting on an outdoor sofa upholstered in white, eschewing caviar hors d’oeuvres and cocktails for water, his back turned to a spectacular view, he was having a quick dinner before an appearance at the Aspen Ideas Festival. But in general, Peterson is traveling the English-speaking world in order to spread the message of this core conviction: that the way to fix what ails Western societies is a psychological project, targeted at helping individuals to get their lives in order, a sociological project that seeks to improve society through politics, or popular culture, or by focusing on class, racial, or gender identity.

SaaS or is an appealing alternative to traditional on-premise systems. The initial investment is lower, the implementation , the user interface is familiar (it runs in a Web browser) and companies don’t need full-time IT staff to maintain servers and hardware. Most ERP vendors now offer—or have plans to offer—some kind of Web-based option.

Vendors have responded to rapid growth in smartphone adoption by developing mobile interfaces for their ERP software systems. For example, Oracle already has a mobile client, so do SAP and Epicor.

Although very much in its infancy, many ERP companies are developing social media tools to keep abreast of the bigger trend playing out. Internal tools are being developed to foster greater collaboration among employees, while integration betwen ERP programs and outside networks such as Facebook and Twitter is also taking place.

ACCEO Solutions has launched a cloud-based ERP offering that is built on the Acumatica platform and targets the Canadian ERP market. The solution is the fruit of ACCEO’s OEM partnership with Acumatica.

Acumatica signed a long-term agreement with Malaysian financial management software vendor Censof Holdings Berhad (Censof) in September to offer ERP solutions in commercial and public sectors across Southeast Asia. The alliance gives Acumatica a competitive edge via quick access to the market. The companies hope to leverage cloud computing infrastructure, which is gaining traction in the region despite the current low adoption rates.

Anagram Systems launched a cloud-based version of Encore, its ERP software for small businesses. The service was developed keeping in mind the needs and limited budgets of businesses having 1-150 employees. It provides small businesses affordable access to advanced and secure hosting facilities as well as the full range of ERP capabilities.

Small and Enterprise refer to the size of the software vendor company—not necessarily the size of customers they serve.

We break vendors into two groups for two reasons: It’s a more equal comparison of products, and software buyers have told us it’s helpful.

To determine who’s Small and who’s Enterprise, we look at how many employees the vendors have. All products in FrontRunners, whether Enterprise or Small, are evaluated using the same process.

How Are FrontRunners Products Selected?

Products Are Scored Based on User Reviews

The gist is that products are scored in two areas—Usability and User Recommended—based on actual user ratings.

To be considered at all, products must have at least 20 reviews published within the previous 18 months, and meet minimum user rating scores. For example, vendors were only considered for this market if they offered both core financials, human resources and inventory management as well as at least three of the following: data collection and analysis, supply chain management, manufacturing planning, enterprise asset management, warehouse management or customer relationship management.

From there, user reviews dictate the Usability and User Recommended scores. Usability is plotted on the x-axis and User Recommended on the y-axis.
